E-Books are huge sellers. Some of the biggest authors in the internet marketing arena are using them but there are some things that I will point out that you may not have known.

No printing costs: Yes, having no printing costs is a big advantage. I would love to save that money month after month. No shipping costs: You are going to save on all your shipping costs as well.

Less hassles: Most people will get their e-book easily which always translates to happy customers. Not for the e-book format in itself but for their order in general. Remember that people are ordering something and you are promising to fulfill that order with stock as soon as possible.


Possibly lower returns: A friend of mine who sells all his info in e-book form, claims that his returns are lower because people don't see the book sitting around reminding them of the money that they paid. However, his numbers are pretty much the same as mine (in terms of returns). So I consider this a non-issue.


Less perceived value: People aren't going to pay as much for an e-book as they will for something that they are going to get to hold in their hands. I remember the first time that I got Corey Rudl's manuals in the mail. I kept thinking, "these are huge. This guy knows what he is doing". I vowed to have real materials from then on.

Less people reading the materials: It is my firm belief that people don't read e-books the same way that they read a real book. There has to be a conscious effort to read an e-book. Somebody has to be willing to sit down at his or her computer and turn the thing on. People can grab a real book off the shelf and read just a few pages.

Lower backend sales: Everybody loves to sell products after their initial one and I am convinced (through my discussions with e-book sellers) that their backend sales are lower since so few people are actually reading their materials.

Less ability to sell at higher price: It is awfully hard to convince someone to spend $299 or $599 on an e-book. Whether this is on the backend or not is irrelevant. There are actually companies out there that are selling e-books on internet marketing for $199. I think that people should expect (and frankly demand) a real book for that price.

Theft: When your book is merely an e-mail, you are open to theft. If the e-book sellers were smart, they would get their stuff put on an oversized CD ROM that really couldn't be copied (this is now possible). They would only spend 80 cents on the CD and shipping would be minimal.

Technology Issues: This is something that I don't have to worry about. People can always read my books or listen to my tapes. That isn't the case with an e-book. There are always going to be people who just don't get how to install it or people who are going to have problems with it. You are going to have to staff for this whether you want to or not.

More chargebacks: Since you don't have proof that people signed for anything, you are going to get more charge backs. I know this is a fact since a few e-book sellers have actually commented on this exact point.
